A Forest Observed

Watercolor on paper, string

October 2024

A Forest Observed recreates the forest in two senses: sight and touch. Scenes of the forest are pieced together in individual perspectives, recreating the forest in parts but not as a whole. Walking through the piece simulates brushing past leaves and branches, yet is still distinctly different from reality. These reminiscent recreations are a reminder that any study of the forest — biology, ecology, art, memory — all reflect one perspective of what a forest is. Understanding what a forest truly is can only happen by bringing these studies and experiences together.

This piece was created as the final project for my Earth Projects field course – which explores the intersection of science and art – and presented at the Ithaca Soil Factory Exhibition.
